Max Drawdown Overview

2 min. readlast update: 09.15.2026

Max Drawdown is the maximum decline in your portfolio value, measured from a prior peak to the lowest point reached before a new peak is recorded.

  • Includes both realised and unrealised losses
  • Represents the worst historical decrease in portfolio value
  • Is not automatically reset and continues to record the highest observed loss level over time

🧮Calculation Method

Max Drawdown is calculated relative to your starting balance, not the highest balance achieved.

Example:

  • Starting balance: $100
  • Balance increases to: $1,000
  • A subsequent loss of $40 represents a 40% drawdown, based on the initial balance

🔄Resetting Max Drawdown

You may need to reset your Max Drawdown to ensure it reflects your current account position accurately.

A reset is required when:

  • You make a deposit or withdrawal
  • You intend to align drawdown tracking with your current balance

Important disclosures:

  • Deposits and withdrawals are not included in drawdown calculations
  • Client-initiated trades are excluded from this metric

If your account balance changes due to funding activity, you should reset your Max Drawdown to maintain accurate tracking.
